BRU - 12/05/2011 - Special Solar Impulse

Good evening everybody!

Today, the Solar Impulse successfully made its first international flight with Brussels as its destination (where Solvay HQ are based)! This event could of course not be missed!

After a day following the flight online through the official website (www.solarimpulse.com), discussions on forums and Facebook, the time came to head to the airport. The only question that everybody was asking was: on which runway will the Solar Impulse land? Lots of us were estimating it would be on the 02, until there were several messages (among them one from BRU airport on their Facebook page) announcing a landing on RWY 25R! Everybody jumped in the cars/bike/bicycles towards 25R. We joined the crowd during 15min, to finally hear that it had changed back to 02! New rush to the car and to our original destination, to be there just in time to see it overflying the airport, bank right to be on final and land after having lit a lots of LED on its wings. This plane is majestic, quiet... and really, really slow (average speed: 50 km/h). Between the time we saw it over the airport and the touchdown (21:39), a good 30 minutes passed!

But enough writing, here are the pictures, and the videos (note that I had to interrupt filming in order to take the pics).  Quality is not perfect, due to low light conditions.

This picture was taken with my DSLR, although not of good quality due to low lighting conditions, it gives an idea of how it looks when flying right on you.
